Emeritus Professor David McIntyre

Emeritus Professor David McIntyre is a Pre-eminent Staff Specialist in Endocrinology and Obstetric Medicine at Mater Health and an active Mater researcher.

Emeritus Professor McIntyre is involved in clinical care, teaching and clinical research into many aspects of pregnancy and its complications, particularly the care of women with diabetes and obesity in pregnancy. His major research interests centre on improving the care and clinical outcomes of women with high risk pregnancies, especially those complicated by diabetes. He has pioneered the development of the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) program of structured education for people with Type 1 diabetes, both at Mater and throughout Australia. He is also an active member of the Northern Territory Lifecourse Diabetes Partnership which aims to improve diabetes care in the Northern Territory, especially amongst indigenous women.

Emeritus Professor McIntyre is frequently invited to present on these topics at major international meetings and in 2016 was presented with the Norbert Freinkel Award from the American Diabetes Association for Outstanding Contributions to the field of Diabetes in Pregnancy. In 2019 he was awarded the Jorgen Pedersen Medal for Diabetes in Pregnancy by the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group (Europe) and the Stream Lead Award Lecture for Diabetes and Women’s Health by the International Diabetes Federation.

Emeritus Professor McIntyre has extensive Australian and International collaborations. He is Past Chair of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society and of the International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups, and is the only Australian member of the Committee for Long Term Maternal Health of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO). Emeritus Professor McIntyre is also a Visiting Professor for the Danish Diabetes and Endocrinology Academy and is assisting with implementation of new guidelines for gestational diabetes in Denmark.
